Rachel Robinson (born Rachel Annetta Isum on July 19, 1922) is the widow of Jackie Robinson, a baseball player. She was born in Los Angeles and went to the University of California, Los Angeles for her education. She met Jackie there in 1941, and the two married in 1946, the year before Robinson’s big league debut. Jackie Robinson, Jr., their son, was born in November 1946. Sharon, the Robinsons’ daughter, and David, the Robinsons’ son, were born later. Rachel Robinson continued her nursing profession when Jackie Robinson retired from baseball in 1957, eventually becoming an Assistant Professor at Yale School of Nursing and then the Director of Nursing at the Connecticut Mental Health Center. Rachel launched the Jackie Robinson Foundation after Jackie’s death in 1973. Chancellor Gene Block awarded her the UCLA Medal for her lifetime achievements in 2009. The UCLA Medal was established to “celebrate those individuals who have made remarkable and significant contributions to their professions, higher education, our society, and the people of UCLA,” according to the university’s mission statement. Commissioner Bud Selig presented her with the Commissioner’s Historic Achievement Award in 2007. She now lives in Salem, Connecticut, on a 60-acre (240,000-m2) farm. In the 1950 film The Jackie Robinson Story, Ruby Dee played Robinson, and Nicole Beharie represented her in the 2013 film 42.
