Yayoi Kusama (or Kusama Yayoi) is a Japanese artist and writer who was born on March 22, 1929. She has worked in a number of mediums throughout the course of her career, including painting, collage, sculpture, performance art, and environmental projects, the majority of which reflect her interest in psychedelic hues, repetition, and pattern. Kusama inspired contemporaries such as Andy Warhol and Claes Oldenburg, and was a forerunner of the pop art, minimalist, and feminist art movements. Although Kusama was virtually ignored after leaving the New York art scene in the early 1970s, he is today regarded as one of Japan’s most significant living artists and a key voice of the avant-garde. Kusama was born into an upper-middle-class seedling merchant family in Matsumoto, Nagano, and began producing art at a young age. He went on to study Nihonga painting in Kyoto in 1948. She grew interested in the European and American avant-garde after becoming frustrated with this distinctively Japanese style, and had numerous solo exhibits of her paintings in Matsumoto and Tokyo throughout the 1950s. She went to the United States in 1957, living in New York City, where she created a series of abstract expressionist-influenced paintings. Kusama became a fixture of the New York avant-garde after switching to sculpture and installation as her main media, having her works shown with Andy Warhol, Claes Oldenburg, and George Segal during the early 1960s, when she became linked with the pop art movement.
