Larry A. Silverstein is an American businessman who was born on May 30, 1931. Silverstein was born in Brooklyn and started his career in real estate alongside his father, founding Silverstein Properties. In 1977, Silverstein divorced his business partner, Bernard Mendik, and in the late 1970s, he purchased a series of big office buildings in Midtown and Lower Manhattan. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey awarded Silverstein a contract to build 7 World Trade Center to the north of the World Trade Center site in 1980. When the Port Authority placed the World Trade Center property up for lease in 2000, Silverstein expressed interest in purchasing the whole site. When a contract between the original winner and the Port Authority fell through, Silverstein won the auction and signed the lease on
July 24, 2001. Silverstein announced his intention to rebuild soon after the September 11 attacks, despite a multi-year disagreement with his insurers over whether the assaults constituted one or two events under the provisions of the insurance policy, which allowed for a maximum of $3.55 billion coverage per event. In 2007, a compromise was reached, with insurers agreeing to pay $4.55 billion, which was less than what Silverstein had requested. Silverstein also had a number of disagreements with other parties involved in the reconstruction process, notably the Port Authority. In an April 2006 deal, Silverstein maintained the rights to construct three office buildings (150 Greenwich Street, 175 Greenwich Street, and 200 Greenwich Street), while the Port Authority would control One World Trade Center (formerly known as the “Freedom Tower”), as well as Tower Five.
